Crisis HelpLine
Since 1989, more than 14,500 have called the KUTO Crisis Helpline to talk with a
trained youth volunteer. The KUTO Crisis Helpline is the only hotine in St. Louis that is staffed entirely
by trained youth volunteers. Callers are assured they will talk with someone who knows what it's like to be
a young person.
"Crisis Workers" complete an intensive six week training program. Nearly 40 hours are spent in lecture,
activity-focused exercises, and role-plays situations. Upon completion of this "basic" training, an
additional 15 hours are spent in peer-supervised observations and consultations.
Crisis Helpline volunteers are expected to complete the training and supervised consultations in a timely
manner prior to staffing the Helpline. Crisis Workers are asked to serve a minimum four (4) shifts each
month for the first six (6) months, one of which is to be either a Friday or Saturday evening shift. At the
end of six months, volunteers are asked to serve two (2) shifts per month.
