    Crisis Worker

    What is a 'Crisis Worker?'

A 'Crisis Worker' (CW) is a trained volunteer who provides immediate telephone response intended to assist persons facing any type of personal crisis. These situations could include: health issues, substance use or abuse, family violence, sexual conflicts, depression, feelings of anxiety, even thoughts of suicide. Also, CWs assess and refer persons with mental and physical health problems to appropriate community resources, including social service agencies.

What kind of training do you need to become a Crisis Worker for KUTO?

Training is detailed and comprehensive, over 50 hours are invested in class room workshops, role-play exercises, and observations. Additionally, a minimum 6 hours of peer facilitated CW 'Consulation' is required.

What is covered in the training?

Training material includes: agency orientation, values identification, realizing and setting personal boundaries, active listening, stress and depression, crisis prevention, suicide intervention, caller management and triage strategies. The training consists of both evening and weekend workshops, and is held at the KUTO business office, located in Brentwood, Missouri.

    Are there special qualifications?

Trainees must be between 15 1/2 and 21 years old. Each prospective trainee must complete an application and brief interview process. Individuals should be able to communicate well, accept supervision and develop appropriate working relationships with staff and fellow volunteers. Successful completion of the training program, with a minimum cumulative average of 85%, is also required.

What does KUTO expect from Helpline Crisis Workers?

The training and support materials are provided free of charge to all trainees. In exchange, we expect:
    1. Consistent and proficient implementation of skills when scheduled on the Helpline.
    2. CWs will be punctual and responsible when arriving for scheduled shifts. In the event of an unexpected conflict, finding a replacement is the responsibility of the CW, not agency staff.
    3. Commit to at least 3 shifts per month. One shift must be a Friday, Saturday or Sunday shift.
    4. Make a commitment to KUTO of at least 6 months of staffing the Helpline or 180 hours in addition to the training.
    5. Respect and maintain the confidentiality of all Crisis Helpline callers.
